Mountain View Police Use Pinterest To Find Rightful Owners Of Stolen Jewelry

MOUNTAIN VIEW (KCBS) - Several people are facing charges related to the theft of a pile of bracelets, necklaces and other stolen jewelry recovered by police back in May, but few of the jewelry owners have come forward to claim their property, Mountain View police said Wednesday.

The jewelry was discovered at a home in San Jose after two burglary arrests at a motorcycle shop led detectives to the residence where they arrested two more people.

So far, police have been able to track down only nine of the rightful owners, said Mountain View Police Sergeant Saul Jaeger.

"To be able to put nine people that lost jewelry back to the owners is something that's very satisfying for law enforcement. We don't often get to do that," he said.

The jewelry that's been returned was worth about $13,000, Jaeger said, but there are still hundreds of pieces unclaimed. Police have posted pictures of all the jewelry in the case to the department's Pinterest page.

"The use of social media allows the Mountain View Police Department to reach out and gain a bigger viewership of whatever we're doing," he said.
