Series Of Collisions On I-880 In Hayward Leaves 1 Dead, Driver Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI

HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- One person arrested on suspicion of DUI in one of three collisions, one of which was fatal, on Interstate Highway 880 in Hayward early Thursday morning has been identified as an Oakland man, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Chad Raynor was arrested on suspicion of DUI in a collision on northbound Highway 880 near the West A street off-ramp, CHP officials said.

At 2:26 a.m., officers received a report of the first accident in which a 2004 Infiniti G35 traveling north of Winton Avenue collided with the rear of a 2000 Honda Civic, according to the CHP.

The Infiniti came to rest sideways in the roadway and the Civic came to rest on the right shoulder, CHP officials said.

Raynor was driving a 2004 Buick Rendezvous that struck the right side of the Infiniti, resulting in major intrusion, according to the CHP.

A 1995 Toyota Tercel collided with the rear of the Infiniti soon after, CHP officials said.

The driver of the Infiniti was pronounced dead at the scene and identified as 44-year-old Juan Zamora of Menlo Park, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

Raynor suffered major injuries in the collision and was transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley where he was subsequently arrested, CHP officials said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 2:38 a.m. closing all northbound lanes.

One lane was reopened about an hour later, CHP officials said.

A third collision, separate from the first two accidents, was reported around 5:10 a.m. on northbound Highway 880 near the Winton Avenue off-ramp, about a mile south of A Street, he said.

At least one person suffered minor injuries in that accident involving two cars, according to Bartlett.

A second Sig-alert was issued for the area, maintaining that only one right lane was open amidst the investigation of the three collisions, CHP officials said.

Four of five northbound lanes remained closed until about 6:20 a.m., according to the CHP.
