Bay Area Getting Much Needed Rain; Morning Commute Keeps CHP Busy

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — The good news: the Bay Area is getting a lot of much needed rain. The not so good news the wet weather is making for a slow commute.

"It's going to definitely affect the morning commute and continue through most of the day today with another round of heavy precipitation possible early tomorrow morning as well," Roger Goss, spokesman for the National Weather Service told KCBS.

California Highway Patrol Officer Dan Jackowitz told KCBS that drivers need to take caution.

"Keep a high visual horizon in front of your vehicle. Make sure you're paying attention to the front of your vehicle. Obviously visibility is going to be poor with the water coming down and being kicked up by the vehicles in front of you," he said.

At about 6:45 a.m. the CHP Golden Gate Division reported 100 active incidents on Bay Area roads including collisions, flooding and debris on the road. While many of those incidents, were duplicate calls, that number still reflected the the CHP's busy morning.

Jackowitz said the many drivers continue to ignore speed limits and that puts everyone on the road in danger.

"Today I wrote a speeding ticket from someone going 93 miles an hour in the rain and that is just totally unacceptable," he said.

Jankowitz said drivers need to be cautious about the standing water pooling on the freeways. He said avoid hydroplaning by by slowing down lifting off accelerator and not to braking suddenly.
