Looking For A Pet? These 12 'Hard Luck Hounds' Need A New Home
/ CBS San Francisco
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Oakland Animal Services is launching a "Hard Luck Hounds" campaign to try to get people to adopt 12 dogs who have been at the shelter for more than two months.
Animal shelter officials said they will waive the adoption fees for dogs taken by qualified homes and give adopting families a "make-over" sponsored by Pet Food Express for their new four-legged companion.
The make-over includes a free collar, leash and dog bed. Adopters also will get a 20 percent off coupon from Pet Food Express.
Oakland Animal Services Director Rebecca Katz said in a statement, "This is a great way to help call attention to some of our long term residents who are wonderful, friendly dogs."
Katz said, "We were so thrilled there were so many dog, cat and bunny adoptions before the holidays and now we need to focus on those animals who were just overlooked."
The Hard Luck Hounds will also be helped by local students and Wood Middle School in Alameda.
As part of a special class project, the students will work on their writing and art skills by creating a marketing campaign for the dogs throughout January.
Katz said, "It is so great to have help from Pet Food Express and these terrific kids. With this kind of support, I predict we'll get many people to wager on a Hard Luck Hound and take home a new family member soon."
Photographs and biographies of the 12 dogs are available on Oakland Animal Services' website. Adoption qualifications also are listed on the website.
