Moderate 4.5 Quake Strikes Northwest Corner Of Nevada, Felt Across The Border In California
ALTURAS, Modoc County (CBS SF) – An earthquake measuring magnitude 4.5 struck the seismically active northwest corner of Nevada, near the California border early Thursday morning.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake struck around 1:09 p.m. near the Sheldon Contiguous Study Area, at a depth of 5.9 miles. The epicenter is about 80 miles northeast of the town of Alturas in Modoc County and about 43 miles southeast of the town of Lakeview, Oregon.
Visitors to the USGS website from northeastern California and southern Oregon said they felt the quake.
The earthquake's epicenter is near the same area a series of moderate earthquakes struck late last year. A magnitude 4.9 and 4.1 struck within 24 hours of each other on November 4th. Last August, a swarm of nearly 100 earthquakes of magnitude 1 or higher was reported.
