Oakland-BART Bike Station Opens; Cyclists Can Stash Their Rides For Free

OAKLAND (KCBS)— You can now stow your bike free for a day at a new BART Bike Station in the Uptown neighborhood at 19th and Broadway streets.

The convenient location next to the 19th Street Bart Station is a quick solution for those who have experienced cramped BART cars and may need a quick fix to stash their bike somewhere safe.

BART Director Robert Raburn said ridership is increasing steadily, meaning they have to think outside of the box.

"BART's hitting record ridership largely because of the changing dynamics. People are moving to the central city areas and becoming transit dependent," he said.

At the bike station you can drop off your bike, receive a claim check and go on your way.

Chris Wong of Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, a non-profit organization said she's had two bikes stolen and this is sorely needed.

"This is for anyone who actually wants to visit the Uptown-downtown area of Oakland who has a bike. It doesn't matter where your destination is, but it certainly is a convenient transit hub for anyone connecting to BART or any of the AC Transit buses that run through here," she said.

The bike station is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and is funded by the Safe Routes to Transit program.
