One Million Pound PG&E Transformer Trucked From South Bay To Moss Landing
MORGAN HILL (KPIX 5) – A truck weighing in at nearly 1 million pounds snaked its way through the South Bay late Wednesday night, carrying a PG&E transformer.
The transformer was being transported from a substation in Newark to Moss Landing, in Monterey County, all in one piece.
"It's like a big train on the road," said Jim Morgan, general superintendent of Bigge, who is running this complex move.
"The whole route is pretty challenging," Morgan said.
The massive truck, which occupies two lanes, must navigate twists and turns along the route, with logistics planning from Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol and all the counties along the way.
Morgan said the biggest hurdle on the journey is Highway 152. Morgan said, "When we get on 152, it's a real narrow roadway, lots of turns, the CHP has to find a place to put those people when we come up on them," referring to other drivers.
The transformer is expected to be arrive at Moss Landing on Thursday. PG&E said the first leg of the journey went off without a hitch.
