Jan Wahl Movie Review: 'The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' & 'Deli Man'

THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG)

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— KCBS Entertainment editor Jan Wahl reviews "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel". 2011 was our last time with this interesting group of seniors at this eccentric Jaipur hotel. The terrific, already-loved cast includes Bill Nighy, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, and even the addition of Richard Gere. While the sets are gorgeous and cinematography of India are great, unfortunately, filmmakers stuffed it full of plot and left characters aside. Patel is manic now working on hotel 2. It would have been better to keep it simple and let us ride the emotional lives so we could connect and care. Thankfully Maggie Smith lights up a few scenes, but it's not as smart, poignant or entertaining as the first one, but still worth checking out.

DELI MAN (Not Rated)
No matter what your culture or how you grew up, food played an important part of the process. Take Jewish culture for example; the delicatessen reflects the heart of a vital ethnic history. In this feature documentary, we meet third-generation deli man Ziggy Gruber. He has created possibly the finest deli in the country—in Houston, Texas! Ziggy is a fine deli and Jewish chef his beloved food brings back the spirit of his grandfather. The film also looks at Katz's, The Carnegie, Nate and Al's, San Francisco's Wise Sons and a few others. I do a speech on food and film and this one combines food and heart. It goes to the top of my list.
