App Downloads Driver’s Licenses To Smartphones, Would Eliminate Trips To DMV

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — Those painful trips to the DMV may one day be a thing of the past. A company has come up with a way to put your driver’s license on your smartphone.

Morphotrust, a Massachusett-based biometric company has developed digital driver’s licenses or DDLs.

Drivers who want a DDL would simply download a smartphone app.

“You could verify yourself one of several ways,” said Jenny Openshaw, of MorphoTrust. “Either using a pin or possibly using a selfie.”

To further protect against identity theft, DDLs will have a slew of security features. There are also privacy concerns to be addressed.

California’s Department of Justice already works with MorphoTrust for things like fingerprinting services, identity checks and TSA pre-screening. But Delaware lawmakers are considering DDLs already, and Iowa will begin a pilot program, this summer. If it goes well, digital drivers licenses could roll out in that state in 2016.
