Suspect Arrested In Connection With Oakland Man's Death Following Fight
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of a man who suffered traumatic injuries in an apparent fight near Interstate Highway 980 in Oakland, police said Thursday.
The suspect in the death of 58-year Barry DeWitt of Oakland was arrested on Wednesday by the North Oakland crime reduction team, according to a posting by Lt. Chris Bolton.
Police said officers who responded to a report of a woman screaming found DeWitt suffering from multiple traumatic injuries in the 2200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Saturday.
DeWitt may have been involved in a fight in the 500 block of Sycamore Street shortly before he was found, police said.
DeWitt was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Bolton said an investigation identified a suspect who was said to have been involved in a fight with DeWitt in the 500 block of Sycamore Street as well as at the corner of 23rd Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
Bolton said the Alameda County District Attorney's Office is reviewing police reports on the case before deciding whether to file charges against the suspect.
Jail records indicate that the suspect is 40-year-old Brandon Jones, who is being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
Bolton said that even though a suspect has been arrested the police investigation into DeWitt's death is still ongoing and anyone with information about it should call the Oakland Police Department's homicide unit at (510) 238-3821 or their tip line at (510) 238-7950.
Bolton said police are especially interested in talking to witnesses and reviewing footage of the incident that captured by privately-maintained surveillance cameras in the area of the apparent fight.
