Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested At Graduation Ceremony In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) – Fairfield police arrested a suspect of an attempted murder at a high school graduation ceremony Thursday evening, a police lieutenant said.

An off-duty police officer informed the Fairfield Police Department around 5:30 p.m. that Manuel Antonio Rodrigues, 19, of Fairfield, was in the audience of the Rodriguez High School graduation, Lt. Jausiah Jacobsen said.

Rodrigues was a suspect in the shooting at a vehicle at Dover Avenue and Air Base Parkway around 11:14 a.m. on May 25, Lt. Kevin Carella said. Neither of the people in the vehicle, an 18-year-old Suisun man and a 19-year-old Fairfield man, were injured in the shooting, Carella said.

Police kept their eyes on Rodrigues during the graduation ceremony in case an attempt to arrest him would cause a disruption or detract from the positive occasion for the seniors and their families, Jacobsen said.

Police also wanted to avoid a potentially dangerous confrontation in the crowd, Jacobsen said.

When the ceremony was over, Rodrigues was arrested as he was leaving the stadium, Jacobsen said.

Officers remained at the high school to explain what happened and squelch any rumors that may have been circulating, Jacobsen said.
