Redwood City Man Suspected Of Abusing, Killing Toddler

REDWOOD CITY (CBS SF) -- Police arrested a 27-year-old man Saturday on suspicion of killing a toddler in Redwood City, police said.

Officers arrested Redwood City resident Daniel Contreras at about 12:30 a.m., according to police.

Officers and medics responded at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday to a report of a child not breathing in an apartment in the 400 block of Madison Avenue, police said. When medics arrived they found the child unconscious and unresponsive, according to police.

Medics started life-saving procedures and transported the toddler to Kaiser Permanente's Redwood City Medical Center where the child died, according to police. The toddler was in Contreras care and he told authorities the child fell accidentally from a table, police said.

The coroner performed at autopsy on the toddler Friday and determined the death was a homicide, according to police. Officers booked Contreras into the San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of killing the toddler and felony child abuse, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to get in touch with Detective Glenn Albin at (650) 780-7141 or Detective Joe O'Gorman at (650) 780-7147.
