Powerful Bay Area Women Are A Force To Be Reckoned With On Women's Equality Day

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Women's Equality Day was celebrated across the country Wednesday, marking the 95th anniversary of the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote.

That fight for equality is still being waged after a century and Bay Area women are in the vanguard.

Attorney General Kamala Harris is in headlines every day, battling for justice. Senator Dianne Feinstein and Representative Nancy Pelosi represent the Bay Area in Washington, yet in fact, women make up just 20% of the Senate and 19% of Congress.

Some of the most powerful women in business lead Bay Area tech companies. Marissa Mayer (Google), Cheryl Sandberg (Facebook) and Safra Katz (Oracle) are just three in a long list of movers and shakers, but nationally, women comprise only 5% of CEO positions, according to the Pew Research Center.

Many took to Twitter to trumpet the power of women -- celebrating the quintessential yin, in a sea of yang.
Amazingly, hundreds struck a pose like our very own Rosie the Riveter, or turned a phrase like our beloved Maya Angelou, mirroring Bay Area women as a model of strength, a voice for the people, and a force to be reckoned with.
