South Bay Restaurant Rating App Shows Detailed Health Department Reports

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- South Bay diners have a new tool to help them determine where to go out to eat, and which places to avoid because of health department violations.

Santa Clara County has rolled out an app that allow diners to access detailed inspection reports of the restaurants they plan to visit.

The SCCDineOut app was unveiled last month about a year after the county began a ratings system for restaurants.

The app is able to link to the full inpection reports of the restaurants.

Among the violations found:

Veggie Land in Cupertino: "live cockroaches found directly in rice" and "fresh rodent droppings inside dry ingredients."
Pho Hoa in Sunnyvale: "several dead roaches on storage shelf" and "black mold."
Billy's Boston Chowder House in Los Gatos: "many live cockroaches … on the ground and on counter."

Restaurant owners declined to comment to KPIX 5.

Santa Clara County uses a color-coded placard and scoring system for restaurants showing diners green for pass, yellow for conditional pass, or red for failure to pass.

Out of the 8,000 restaurants in the county, 76 were shut down within the last six months over major violations.

The SCCDineOut app is currently available only on the Apple iOS.
