SJSU Water Polo Club Mourns Death Of Teammate Who Died During Practice

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Friends and family are in mourning after the death of a San Jose State University student who died during water polo club practice last week.

Ryan Harryman was taken off life support Saturday night. The 24-year-old suffered severe brain damage after he fell unconscious and was pulled from the bottom the pool at the campus Aquatics Center just days before.

Emergency personnel responded to the school swimming pool Tuesday at 6:23, according to the San Jose Mercury.

Harryman attended Homestead High in Cupertino and would have graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology. In an email to the Mercury his brother, William Harryman said Ryan began swimming competitively when he was 4 and "had many different hobbies, including water polo, writing, music and comedy." He said family members were present when life-support was removed.

This weekend, Harryman's teammates posted a picture of a water polo ball on the club's Facebook page, upon which they wrote their condolences along with a message of sympathy that ended, "You will be dearly missed, Ryan. Here on out, everything we do is #ForRyan."

The University's interim President Susan Martin said, This is a tragic loss of a young man in the prime of life. Our San Jose State University community expresses its sympathy to Ryan's family, friends and teammates."
