Is Indian Summer Weather Upon Us?

KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.

Q: Roberta, I saw the forecast and we have nothing but warm weather ahead. Is this "Indian Summer?" Rob Williams; Novato
A: Technically Rob, the Bay Area does NOT experience an "Indian Summer."

I have found many variations of the term "Indian Summer," but I prefer to use the definition from the National Weather Service Glossary. Indian Summer is: "An unseasonably warm period near the middle of autumn, usually following by a substantial period of cool weather."Yes, the Bay Area is now experiencing unseasonably warm weather in the middle of autumn, but I am not forecasting a substantial period of cool weather in the long term forecast.

While the Bay Area is anxiously awaiting the arrival of El Niño, the combination of an upper level ridge of high pressure and an offshore flow is producing unseasonably mild/warm temperatures. Afternoon high temperatures today are up to 10 degrees warmer than what we experienced on Monday! The KPIX 7 day forecast indicates very little movement in the thermometer.

LK 7Day Today

Daily highs will be banking between near 70 at the beaches to mid/high 80s inland. Can we say, "stagnant?" Ugh. Fingers crossed for a predicted change in the weather pattern by Friday, October 30th!
