San Jose Police ID Suspect, Victim In Deadly Hostage Situation

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Police have identified a suspect and victim killed at a home in San Jose's Cambrian neighborhood Monday in a hostage situation that turned into an officer-involved shooting.

Leonel Acevedo, 45, was the armed suspect fatally shot by police outside a home in the 4400 block of Camden Avenue, police Officer Albert Morales said.

The woman who he allegedly took hostage and was later found dead in the home was Yolanda Najera, 53, according to Morales.

Officers responded to a report of an armed male who forced his way into the Camden Avenue residence around 2:15 p.m., Morales said.

When officers reached the scene, they set up a perimeter around the home and blocked traffic on neighboring roads, Morales said.

Surrounding homes were evacuated and the Police Department's special operations unit responded to the scene, according to Morales.

Shortly after 5 p.m., the male suspect, later identified as Acevedo, stepped out of the home with at least one handgun, Morales said.

Acevedo allegedly shot at the officers and one of them fired back, striking him, according to Morales.

Acevedo was pronounced dead at the scene, Morales said.

Police searched the home and found a woman, later identified as Najera, with at least one gunshot wound. Emergency crews pronounced her dead at the scene, according to Morales.

An officer, a 12-year veteran of the department, was hit by gunfire during the incident and was transported to a hospital to be treated for a minor injury, Morales said.

Najera and Acevedo were familiar with one another but police have not specified their relationship.

Investigators have learned Acevedo used to live at the Camden Avenue home, according to Morales.

Police are looking into the motive and circumstances surrounding the case, Morales said.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Detective Sgt. Guire or Detective Tran at (408) 277-5283. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at (408) 947-7867.
