Woman 'In Bad Shape' After Car Slams Into Her San Leandro Home
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A 25-year-old woman who was critically injured when a speeding car rammed into her home in San Leandro on Monday night remains "in bad shape" Wednesday, a police spokesman said.
Although the woman's injuries aren't considered life-threatening, she's undergoing surgery Wednesday for a broken back and multiple internal injuries and her recovery could be lengthy, San Leandro police spokesman Lt. Robert McManus said.
Police said the woman was asleep in the garage of her home near Farnsworth and Purdue streets in San Leandro's Washington Manor district at about 10:30 p.m. Monday when an Acura SUV drove into a garage wall of the single-family home, penetrating completely inside the garage.
The woman was pinned under the vehicle and had to be extricated before she could be taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.
A dog was also in the garage with a litter of puppies at the time of the crash and two of them have died from their injuries, according to police.
McManus said the SUV's driver, a 20-year-old man, was treated for minor injuries and then released.
McManus said police interviewed the man this morning but won't complete their investigation until alcohol and drug tests are completed, which may take several weeks.
He said the man has been cooperative so far.
McManus said that at a minimum, police will seek a charge against the man for reckless driving resulting in great bodily injury because "he definitely was exceeding the speed limit."
Farnsworth Street is in a residential neighborhood and its speed limit is 30 mph, he said.
Police would also seek a charge for driving under the influence if the alcohol and drug tests support such a charge, McManus said.
Police said the woman's home has been yellow-tagged by city building inspectors, meaning the home's other residents have been allowed to retrieve their belongings but cannot live there again until major damage to the garage and kitchen is repaired.
McManus said six or seven people were in the main part of the house at the time of the crash and weren't injured.
