San Francisco Short Shorts Maker Could Score Free Super Bowl Ad

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – An ad during the Super Bowl costs millions, but the San Francisco-based clothing line known for their unique shorts could get a 30 second spot for free.

The hot home grown clothing line called "Chubbies" looks to make pants, so last season.

"A lot of the brand is, how do you make clothes more relatable to guys, and we found something that we thought worked for us," said Chubbies co-founder Tom Montgomery.

Montgomery said that something is short shorts, ones that come in enough colors and patterns to make your head spin.

"We are the guys fighting for the weekend, the guys fighting for that Friday at 5 p.m. feeling," Montgomery said.

That brand confidence is likely one reason customers voted Chubbies one of three small businesses nationwide that should get a free ad during Super Bowl 50.

Montgomery said, "That's where our audience is. We are 18 to 30 year old guys, and every single one of those people is going to be watching the Super Bowl."

This is the second year software firm Intuit has done this Super Bowl competition. Chubbies is among three finalists of the 15,000 businesses that applied, but only one will get nationwide exposure.
