Warriors Coach Luke Walton Victim Of Car Thief
OAKLAND (CBS-SF) – Not only was Golden State Warriors interim head coach Luke Walton on the brink of NBA history Tuesday, but police have also recovered his stolen 2014 Mercedes Benz.
Oakland court records reveal that a man suspected of stealing Walton's Mercedes Benz was in custody Tuesday after he was arrested for attempting to flee officers in another carjacked vehicle.
Oakland resident Lamonte Campbell, 20, is charged with carjacking, burglary and assault for assaulting an elderly woman and taking her car last Thursday.
The next day, police saw him driving the car and tried to pull him over, but he sped away, blowing through stop signs and driving the wrong way on a two-way street.
Eventually he crashed into parked cars in the 2000 block of Poplar Street in West Oakland at about 10:30 a.m. and ran from the scene, but police captured him a short time later, according to court records.
Campbell is also charged with auto theft and burglary for stealing Walton's 2014 Mercedes Benz a week ago.
Authorities told the Oakland Tribune that Walton's car was later crashed in East Oakland. No other details were released, but the authorities told the paper that they do not believe Campbell knew at the time it was Walton's car.
He remains in Santa Rita Jail on $355,000 bail.
Walton has stepped in for ailing Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and has guided the defending NBA Champions to a 15-0 start to the 2015-2016 season. The mark ties the 1948-49 Washington Capitols and the '93-94 Houston Rockets for the longest win streak to start a season.
The Warriors play the Los Angeles Lakers in Oakland on Tuesday night with a chance to set the all-time record for the best start to a season.
