Monterey Co. Deputies Arrest Man Following 20-Mile Pursuit

SALINAS (CBS SF) – A transient allegedly led Monterey County sheriff's deputies on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen vehicle early Tuesday morning in Salinas, sheriff's officials said.

At 2:53 a.m., sheriff's deputies spotted a stolen Honda Accord at the intersection of E. Laurel Drive and Natividad Road in Salinas.

After a failed traffic stop, the Honda's driver led the deputies through city streets and a highway in a 27-minute, 20-mile pursuit, sheriff's officials said.

The vehicle eventually became disabled, ending the pursuit.

Sheriff's officials identified Matthew Giles, 31, as the driver.

Giles, who was described as a transient, was arrested on counts of reckless evading of a police officer and unlawful taking or driving or a vehicle.
