Mother Nature Delivers Another Punch

ST. HELENA (CBSSF) – The latest in a series of storms churned to life in the Pacific rolled through the Bay Area early Wednesday, dumping nearly an inch of rain in Wine Country.

According to the National Weather Service, St. Helena had received 0.92 of an inch of rain during a 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Yountville had gotten 0.95 of an inch, Angwin 0.92 and Mt. St. Helena 1.05 inches.

Meanwhile, an inch of rain fell on the Point Reyes National Shoreline along the Sonoma County coast.

The brunt of the storm was felt in the North Bay, but other areas did receive rain.

The weather service reported that 0.33 of an inch had fallen at San Francisco International Airport over that same time span. Mt. Diablo had 0.61 of an inch, Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz Mountains received nearly an inch and half of an inch had fallen in Oakland.

While the heaviest rain had moved through the Bay Area, forecasters predicted scattered showers and possible thundershowers for the afternoon hours.

In the Sierra, a winter storm warning was in effect until midnight.

Six inches to a foot of new snow was forecasted for elevations above 5,500 feet with as much as nearly two feet expected to fall on the highest peaks.

Chains were required for travel on the mountain passes on Highways 50 and 80 on Wednesday morning.

Local residents were to get a little break until Thursday evening when more showers were predicted into Friday.

A stronger winter storm front was forecasted to arrive on Saturday with heavy rain and strong winds.
