VALLEJO (CBS SF) -- A 52-year-old man died early Sunday morning in Vallejo after his vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree.

Around 3 a.m. officers responded to a vehicle accident on Laurel Street south of Benicia Road, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found a silver 1991 Ford Probe that had struck a tree. The vehicle's driver was slumped over the steering wheel and unresponsive, police said.

Emergency crews arrived and pronounced the man dead.

After a preliminary investigation, officers concluded the vehicle left the roadway and went through an empty lot, before crossing Laurel Street and striking the tree, according to police.

Investigators do not yet know what caused the accident.

The victim is a resident of Vallejo and police are withholding his identity until the next of kin is notified.
