6.2 New Zealand Earthquake Strikes Following 5.8 Shaker

AUCKLAND ISLAND, New Zealand. (CBS SF) -- A strong earthquake struck Tuesday off the coast of New Zealand, less than 48 hours after a strong quake collapsed a cliff in another part of the country.

The 6.2 magnitude quake hit just before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday local time, about 11:30 a.m. Monday Pacific time.

It was centered 135 miles northwest of Auckland Island and some 733 miles southwest of the capital, Wellington.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries and no tsunami threat.

Sunday, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Christchurch, about 500 miles northeast of Tuesday's earthquake. The earthquake crumbled a cliff face into the sea near a popular beach.

No injuries were reported but local news reports described damage from items falling off shelves and cracks in buildings.

New Zealand sits in what is known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a continuous stretch of oceanic trenches and volcanoes where most of the world's earthquakes occur.
