Man Charged With Killing Off-Duty Richmond Officer, Kidnapping

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) – The Solano County District Attorney's Office charged a Fairfield man Wednesday with the murder of off-duty Richmond police officer Augustine Vegas Jr. and the kidnapping of Vegas' 6-year-old grandson last week.

Robert James Vega, 30, also is charged with an enhancement alleging person use, intentional discharge and personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing death during the commission of a felony.

The gun enhancement subjects Vega to 30 years plus 25 years to life in prison consecutive to the felony murder and kidnapping sentence.

Vega did not enter a plea Wednesday, and his next court appearance in Solano County Superior Court is March 9.

Vegas Jr., 58, was shot multiple times inside his home at 35 Narragansett Court in the Glen Cove area of Vallejo shortly before 4:40 a.m.  He died at the scene.

Vega allegedly fled with Vegas' grandson to a Fairfield residence where Fairfield police arrested him and found the boy was unharmed.

Vega, a foster parent, was a 15-year veteran of the Richmond Police Department, had 10 children and 22 grandchildren and was involved in the Vallejo nonprofit Foster Greatness, an organization that provides services for foster children.

Visitation is scheduled between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. today at The Hill, 210 Locust Drive, Vallejo. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium, 403 Civic Center Plaza, Richmond.

A reception will follow at 2 p.m. at McCormick Hall at the Solano County Fairgrounds. Burial will be private.
