Driver Runs Away After Slamming SUV Into Home

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – Police are searching for a driver who left the scene after slamming his SUV into a San Jose home following a chase early Monday morning.

According to authorities, a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy was following a red Lincoln Navigator around midnight when it suddenly started going on the wrong side of the road and took off.

The deputy chased the SUV for two blocks until the driver crashed into a Victorian-style home on the 1100 block of Park Avenue. The SUV took out part of the crawlspace and the natural gas meter to the home.

Authorities said the driver took off running and the deputy started chasing him on foot, but the chase was broken off after he smelled gas coming from the home. The deputy then evacuated the home and PG&E shut off gas service.

A K9 unit from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety was brought in to search for the suspect, but he has not been found as of Monday morning.

Park Avenue near the home was closed for several hours as authorities cleared the SUV.

No injuries were reported.
