San Francisco Health Officials Confirm City's First Case Of Zika Virus

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Health officials in San Francisco announced Thursday that they received confirmation almost a month ago from the state health department that a resident of the city has tested positive for the Zika virus.

In a press release issued Thursday, the San Francisco Department of Public Health stated the person was infected with Zika virus while traveling in Central America and has since fully recovered and doing well.

According to the release, no transmission of the disease took place in the United States and there was no risk of transmission to the local community from this case.

City health officials are not releasing further details about the Zika case in order to protect patient privacy.

Officials want to assure the general public there is currently no reason to be concerned of any risk for contracting Zika in San Francisco at this time and that the virus is not circulating in the city.

The confirmation of the case in San Francisco comes the day after news surfaced of a pregnant woman in Napa County diagnosed with the Zika virus, also while traveling in Central America.

Last month, a woman in neighboring Yolo County tested positive for the Zika virus, also following a trip abroad. The woman was reportedly doing fine and her case was described as mild.
