Celebrate International Women's Day

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- March 8 marks International Women's Day around the world.

It's a day to think about women. Celebrate women. Take action. Spread the word.

Today is the day to organize a 'girlcott' -- go on strike, fight for equal pay, denounce all forms of domestic violence, plan a delicious meal (you don't necessarily cook) with the women you love, donate money or time to support women's causes, blog, tweet -- and raise your voice.

Remember to use the hashtags: #IWD2016, #PledgeForParity

On this day in history:

  • Queen Anne ascended to the British throne (1702);
  • Women in New York City went on strike, protesting for higher wages, shorter hours and better working conditions (1857);
  • The idea of International Women's Bay is born and the International Conference of Socialist Women in 1910
  • Women demanded the right to vote in Germany (1914)
  • Phyliss M. Daley was sworn in as Navy ensign, the first black nurse to achieve the office (1945)
  • The United Nations officially recognized International Women's Day (1982)

... and remember
