Gunman At Large After Berkeley Shooting Critically Injures Two

BERKELEY (CBS SF) – Police in Berkeley on Wednesday were searching for the gunman in an early morning shooting near the Ashby BART station that left two people fighting for their lives, according to authorities.

It was the second shooting in Berkeley in the space of 24 hours.

Wednesday's incident happened just after 1 a.m. when police got reports of gunshots fired near Tremont and Prince. When authorities arrived, they discovered the shot-up car. Nearby, a man and a woman in their 20s were found in critical condition.

"The evidence indicates it doesn't appear this was random," said Berkeley Police Sgt. Andrew Frankel.

The window of the vehicle displayed stickers for the ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft.

"As to whether or not either party was involved were drivers for either company, we don't know that at this point," said Frankel.

Lyft sent KPIX 5 a statement that read, "We are actively reaching out to the driver to provide assistance and stand ready to support in any way we can."

Wednesday morning's shooting was about 2 miles from a Tuesday shooting that happened just before 12 p.m. in broad daylight. in that incident, a man was shot at Delaware and San Pablo.

No arrests have been made in that crime, which police describe as targeted. Authorities said they do not believe there is a connection between the two shootings.

KPIX 5 talked to neighbors who weren't shocked.

"It's not great, but again, I'm not too concerned," said area resident Mike Goldstein. "Common stuff, every day."

But police said this kind of activity is unusual in Berkeley.

There have already been 9 shootings in the East Bay city so far this year. Last year there were 13 total.

"We're going to look at the information and see if it's going to change what strategies we're going to use to approach deployment of our officers," said Frankel.

Police don't have suspect descriptions in either case.
