Man Enters Not Guilty, Insanity Pleas In Off-Duty Richmond Cop's Murder

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) -- A Fairfield man pleaded both not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity Wednesday to the murder of an off-duty Richmond police officer in February.

Robert James Vega, 30, is charged with the shooting murder of Augustine Vegas Jr., 58, in Vegas' Vallejo home on Feb. 11. Vega also is charged with kidnapping Vegas' 6-year-old grandson. Vega is the boy's father.

The complaint also charges Vega with personal use, intentional discharge and personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing death during the commission of a felony.

Solano County Deputy District Attorney Eric Charm said that Vega's dual plea means there will be a hearing on Vega's sanity if he is convicted of the charges.

Vegas had 10 children and 20 grandchildren and was involved in a non-profit foster care organization.

A date for a preliminary hearing will be set in court April 13, Charm said.
