Once Dry Laguna Lake Filling Up Thanks To Central Coast Winter Storms
SAN LUIS OBISPO (CBS/AP) -- Rainfall has almost refilled San Luis Obispo's Laguna Lake, which went dry last fall amid drought.
Nearly 19 inches of rain this season has made the difference.
City Natural Resources Manager Bob Hill says the lake is now 6 feet to 8 feet deep in some places, but has only a foot or two of water in other places. Hill says the return of water has also brought birds back.
News of Laguna Lake's recovery comes in stark contrast to reports in 2014 of dying, smelly decomposing carp along its shores due to the drought.
The Central Coast is one of the regions that benefited from winter storms. The National Weather Service says the San Luis Obispo airport received 3.95 inches of rain in March -- 123 percent of normal. By comparison, downtown Los Angeles received just 1.6 inches of rain last month -- only 66 percent of normal.
