Hazmat Crews To Clean Up Mercury Spill In Livermore

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) – Fire crews in Livermore remained on scene overnight after 15 square feet of mercury was found covering a street Monday evening, according to fire officials.

Fire officials said firefighters responded to reports of a possible hazardous material spill in the 900 block of I Street at 7:36 p.m., where they discovered the mercury.

According to fire officials, it was unknown how long the mercury had been there, or where it came from.

The Livermore-Pleasanton Hazardous Materials Team was called to the scene and they were able to cover the spill and prevent additional contamination of the area.

In addition, fire officials said the California Department of Toxic Substance Control was contacted and remained on the scene overnight.

According to fire officials, mercury is most commonly found in thermostats, thermometers and other electrical switches. It is a toxic element that can cause damage to the nervous system, lungs and kidneys.

Fire officials said residents in the area were not affected by the spill and I Street remained open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

The cleanup process will begin Tuesday morning.
