Bloody Violence Erupts At California State Prison-Sacramento

FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a prison guard shot one inmate and at least three inmates repeatedly stabbed another inmate in an attack at a maximum security Northern California prison.

Corrections department spokeswoman Terry Thornton says three inmates were armed with homemade weapons in the attack about 10:30 a.m. Monday at California State Prison-Sacramento.

Thornton said later Monday that the victim was undergoing surgery for multiple stab wounds.

A guard trying to break up the assault shot one attacker. The inmate who was shot is recovering in an intensive care unit after surgery at an outside hospital.

The two other attackers were treated at the prison for minor injuries.

Thornton says the motive for the assault is being investigated.

The prison holds nearly 2,400 inmates in Folsom, about 20 miles northeast of Sacramento.
