Trump Says Oakland Among World's Most Dangerous Places

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf is striking back at Donald Trump, after the Republican presidential frontrunner was quoted as saying the city is among the world's most dangerous places.

Trump made the comments while talking to Robert Draper, a writer for the New York Times magazine. The candidate was commenting about a recent bombing in Baghdad.

Draper asked if he had ever been to Iraq, the candidate emphatically said, "Never!"

When asked about the most dangerous place he has been in, Trump first jokingly said Brooklyn. Trump went on to say, "there are places in America that are among the most dangerous in the world. You go to places like Oakland. Or Ferguson. The crime numbers are worse. Seriously."

The comment did not go over well with Mayor Libby Schaaf, who responded on Twitter Wednesday.

According to USA Today, El Salvador had the world's highest homicide rate in 2015, with 104 murders per 100,000 people. By comparison, Oakland had 19.5 murders per 100,000 people in 2014, according to the FBI. Oakland had the third highest violent crime rate in the U.S., the FBI reported, behind Detroit and St. Louis.

KPIX 5 has reached out to the Trump campaign about the candidate's statements.
