Man Critically Injured In Savage San Francisco SoMa Mob Beating
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A man was left with life-threatening injuries and possible brain injuries after a group of teens attacked him early Friday morning in San Francisco's South of Market area, according to police.
The attack occurred around 2:40 a.m. at Harrison and Harriet streets, according to police.
Dry blood was still visible Friday afternoon on the Harrison Street sidewalk where the beating took place.
San Francisco police said 6 Asian teenage boys and girls between 15 and 18 years old attacked a 29-year-old Asian man from Hayward.
"Glass bottles were used, but it was mostly punching and kicking that led to his brain injuries," said SFPD spokesman Carlos Manfredi.
The six teenagers drove off in two separate cars.
After the victim was left bleeding unconscious on the ground, police said two bystanders robbed him of his wallet and other valuable items.
"It's just cold," said Manfredi. "It's heartless. You know, we're raised better than that. At the very least, call 911. Because he's got severe head trauma from the blows to his head."
Other witnesses called 911. Paramedics took the victim to SF General, where he's listed in critical condition. Police described him as suffering from "deteriorating brain function."
"As for why it happened, we don't know yet," said Manfredi. "We haven't been able to interview the victim."
Police don't know if the victim knows the original six attackers. They say if the victim pulls through, he may not remember what happened. He was drunk at the time, walking by himself. There's a bar about a block away from the crime scene.
Aside from the six teenagers, police are also looking for the two suspects who robbed the victim while he was knocked out.
