San Francisco Police Standoff Comes To Dramatic End
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- An armed man who was in a standoff with San Francisco police for almost five hours has been taken into custody after officers used flash-bang grenades to drive him from the home he was barricaded inside, according to authorities.
The incident started following reports of a home invasion burglary at the edge of San Francisco's Nob Hill and Chinatown neighborhoods.
The suspect was holed up inside a multi-unit flat on the 900 block of Pacific Street, police said.
Spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said emergency dispatchers received a call 911 hangup call at 9:20 a.m. and moments later, another call from a resident reporting that someone was breaking into their home.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect inside the home with the resident inside the unit, said Gatpandan. Officers were able to evacuate the resident and at one point the suspect fired a shot, she said.
No one was hurt in the shooting and there were no other outstanding suspects. Police were in the process of negotiating with the suspect, who was believed to have entered the building through the roof.
People in surrounding apartments were asked to evacuate. Police closed nearby streets and were asking people to avoid the area.
Officers negotiated with the suspect for several hours before talks broke down.
At around 2:30 p.m., police used a flash-bang grenade in an attempt to subdue the suspect. The suspect jumped or fell through a skylight next to the adjoining business, a hair salon.
Two women were seen running out of the business as police officers pursued the suspect inside.
The suspect was transported to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries after being taken into custody. The suspect was covered in glass from smashing through the skylight and violently fought with police as he was subdued.
Gatpandan said six officers also suffered minor injuries as they took the man into custody as he bit and spit on them. Gatpandan said that injuries were also sustained by two people who were at the salon.
