SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A puppy taken from a 14-year-old boy at gunpoint earlier this week in San Leandro was returned to the boy after an alert resident recognized the dog and reported it police.

The boy was reunited with his 3-month-old German Shepherd Maya Friday night around 8 p.m. after a woman who saw media coverage of the robbery suspected it was the same dog her friend had recently purchased, according to San Leandro police spokesman Lt. Robert McManus said.

The woman's friend allegedly purchased the dog from a person selling the dog on a street corner in an East Bay city, for about $100, according to McManus.

The robbery occurred Monday, around 8:30 p.m. when the boy was walking with his puppy in the 1500 block of Dayton Avenue, when two men parked their car near him, police said.

One of the passengers inside the car got out and tried to snatch the puppy, named Maya, from the teen. The suspect claimed to be armed with a pistol.

When the teen refused to let go of the dog, the driver then got out of the vehicle and pointed a pistol at him.

The teen let go of the puppy, and the suspects fled in their vehicle with the dog, according to police.

No arrests have been made as of this afternoon, McManus said.

Police however were able to retrieve surveillance video from the area where the puppy was initially taken. Police are seeking a four-door, newer model, silver or gray Mercedes that was in the area at the time, according to McManus.
