Donald Trump Revokes Washington Post Press Credentials

(CBS SF) – Donald Trump announced Monday that he is revoking The Washington Post's press credentials to his campaign, the latest attack by the presumptive Republican nominee on the press.

In a post on Facebook, Trump criticized one of the nation's major newspapers over coverage that he called "incredibly inaccurate" and called the Post "phony and dishonest."

Based on the incredibly inaccurate coverage and reporting of the record setting Trump campaign, we are hereby revoking the press credentials of the phony and dishonest Washington Post.

Trump has barred campaign access to several news organizations during his campaign, including Buzzfeed, Politico, the Huffington Post and Univision.

Earlier this month, reporter Ben Schreckinger of Politico was kicked out of a Trump rally in San Jose after he was spotted by a campaign official at the event. Schreckinger used a general admission ticket to cover the rally after he was repeatedly denied credentials.

In a statement to CNN, Washington Post executive editor Marty Baron said the newspaper will continue to cover Trump's campaign.

"Donald Trump's decision to revoke The Washington Post's press credentials is nothing less than a repudiation of the role of a free and independent press. When coverage doesn't correspond to what the candidate wants it to be, then a news organization is banished. The Post will continue to cover Donald Trump as it has all along -- honorably, honestly, accurately, energetically, and unflinchingly. We're proud of our coverage, and we're going to keep at it."

The Committee to Protect Journalists condemned Trump's action.

"Revoking the credentials of the Washington Post to cover the Trump campaign is bad for voters in the United States and bad for press freedom everywhere," said Robert Mahoney, the organization's deputy executive director, said in a statement. The CPJ urged the campaign to reconsider.
