HUGHSON, Stanislaus County (CBS SF) -- A puppy that was dumped in the middle of a street in a Stanislaus County town was saved by a United Parcel Service driver who happened to drive up at that moment.

The incident happened Tuesday evening in the town of Hughson. The UPS driver saw a car stop on Hatch Road, the car door opened and the puppy dropped in the middle of the street, according to a Hughson Police Services Facebook post.

The driver, identified by the Modesto Bee as 39-year-old Jason Harcrow of Hughson, told police he stopped and picked up the terrier puppy before it could dart into traffic. Harcrow who wasn't able to get the car's license plate, brought it to a police substation.

A staffer at the Stanislaus County Animal Shelter told the Bee the dog had no microchip or tags, but was healthy, clean and appeared to be cared for.

Police said the puppy, believed to be less than a year old, was in great spirits and would be put up for adoption at the county shelter.
