Large Natural Gas Leak Forces Evacuations In San Francisco Neighborhood

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A PG&E spokeswoman said a gas leak this morning in San Francisco's Miraloma Park neighborhood has been capped.

The leak, first reported to PG&E at 9:40 a.m., was capped at 10:42 a.m. at 278 Juanita Way, near the intersection with Rex Avenue, spokeswoman Abby Figueroa said. Crews are making repairs, she said.

"The area's been made secure," Figueroa said.

A crew from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission was digging when they hit a 1-inch gas line between a home and a gas main.

SFPUC spokeswoman Suzanne Gautier said a crew was installing new water service to a home at the foot of Mt. Davidson just south of Portola Dr. when they hit the pipe.

Residents were evacuated from four homes as a precautionary measure because of the leak, San Francisco Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Baxter said.
