Badly Burned Teen Rescued From Hayward House Fire
HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- Firefighters pulled a 16-year-old girl with life-threatening injuries from a burning home near Hayward Thursday morning, fire officials said.
The girl was one of three children who were injured in the fire.
Two boys got out of the house before firefighters arrived and suffered only minor injuries, according to Alameda County Fire Battalion Chief Tom Pappas.
Firefighters found the home near the intersection of Gribben Avenue and Mero Street in flames when they responded at 8:25 a.m., according to Pappas. They started fighting the fire from the front door and went through a back bedroom window looking for victims.
They found the 16-year-old girl trapped inside and pulled her through the window. She was seriously injured and taken to a hospital. The other two boys were taken to a hospital as well.
Once the firefighters arrived, they extinguished the blaze within about 15 minutes despite the high heat, large flames and heavy smoke inside.
Fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said about 60 to 75 percent of the house was destroyed by the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
