Online Election Voting? Stanford Expert Says Pitfalls Too Great

KCBS_740 SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Electronic voting systems are relatively new, and there's talk of giving voters a chance to cast their ballots via the internet.  But, computer science experts say we're long ways from seeing that happen.

David Dill, a Stanford University Professor of Computer Science tells KCBS there are many ways online voting could go wrong.

"There have been studies, at least since 2000 of groups of experts trying to figure out how to do it safely, and they've almost universally said it's something we shouldn't get involved in at this time," Dill said.

Dill said he's against electronic voting systems in general, believing that they're not 100-percent reliable

"The pitfalls are basically if we had widespread internet voting, we wouldn't be able to trust the results of our elections because they're particularly easy to defraud," Dill said.
