Massive Wildfire Puts Brakes On Peak Travel Season In Big Sur Area
BIG SUR (KCBS) -- If you were planning on camping in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park this week, think again.
It's peak travel season on California's Central Coast, and the Soberanes Fire is throwing a big wrench in a lot of plans.
Matt Khalar, supervising ranger at California State Parks says that some private campgrounds are still open, but recommends postponing a trip - even if you have reservations there.
Hotels and Inns haven't been affected as harshly. More than a dozen that we called in Big Sur remain open.
Although you can see the smoke, Beth Harris at Lobos Lodge in Carmel says visitors are largely unaware, and they're booked.
Khalar says state parks between Carmel and Big Sur usually see more than 1,000 guests each day this time of year.
