Suspect Arrested For Allegedly Firing On Oakland Officer After Crash

STOCKTOn (CBS SF) -- A suspect who allegedly opened fire on an Oakland police officer as she was pinned inside her SUV following an accident was arrested early Thursday morning after a SWAT standoff in Stockton, authorities said.

The male suspect, whose name was not immediately being released, was arrested around 4 a.m. after a standoff, Oakland police Lt. Roland Holmgren said at a news conference at police headquarters.

"What led us there is the tenacity of our investigators [and] the co-operation and assistance of the public," said Holmgren.

The suspect barricaded himself inside a residence with three young children, but was taken into custody with the assistance of Stockton police after lengthy negotiations. Investigators served a search warrant at the home and found a firearm consistent with the one used in the shooting Saturday.

None of the children were harmed during the standoff and arrest.

The incident began last weekend when the sergeant was responding to a call at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday and her patrol SUV crashed in the 1900 block of 73rd Avenue.

Shortly afterward, a male suspect approached the patrol vehicle and fired a round, striking the patrol car.

The sergeant wasn't struck by the bullet, but was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries she suffered in the crash. She has since been released but has not returned to work while she continues to recover, according to Holmgren.

Holmgren identified the injured sergeant as N. Clark. The Oakland police roster shows a Sgt. Nadia Clark is employed by the department.

Holmgren confirmed that a firearm was recovered from the scene of the standoff in Stockton "that was consistent with the type of firearm that was used on the night of the incident."

Holmgren said investigators were looking into the motive for the shooting and said it might have to do with anti-police sentiment in some pockets of the country following multiple police shootings in recent weeks of black men, some of which were filmed by witnesses.

Multiple officers were shot and killed in Dallas on July 7 and then again 10 days later in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

"He made some statements when he conducted that act that would lead me to believe that's part of that story a little bit," explained Holmgren.

Police haven't released the suspect's name, but said he was about 30 years old and at one point lived in Oakland. He is currently in Oakland being interrogated by police before the case is turned over to the Alameda County District Attorney.
