Partially Naked Man Injures San Francisco Police Officer Trying To Restrain Him

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A San Francisco police officer was injured last week in the Mission District while trying to restrain a partially naked man who allegedly bit him and tried to gouge his eyes out, police said Thursday.

The officer was the first to respond to a report of a naked man chasing people and throwing a branch at pedestrians in the 3800 block of 25th Street at 6:21 a.m. Friday, police said.

When the officer arrived, he found a partially nude man in his 30s talking to himself. A short time later, the officer called for backup, saying he was involved in a physical struggle with the suspect.

Additional officers then arrived and struggled with the suspect while trying to handcuff him.

During the struggle, the suspect allegedly bit the first officer’s right cheek and attempted to gouge out his eye, leaving the officer with a severe bite mark and an eye injury, police said. The officer also suffered cuts and abrasions to his hands and forearms.

Police arrested Robert Matthew Kaplan, a 37-year-old San Diego resident, on suspicion of felony battery on a peace officer, felony battery causing serious bodily injury, felony assault with a deadly weapon, felony vandalism, felony aggravated mayhem and obstructing and resisting a peace officer.

Police are asking anyone who may have captured the incident on cellphone video to contact the Mission Station Investigation Team during business hours at (415) 558-5400. People can also call the SFPD Tip Line at (415) 575-4444 or send a text message to TIP411 with “SFPD” at the start of the message.
