New Website Lets Users Register To Vote By Text Message

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- Unregistered voters can now register by text message thanks to 'Hello Vote.'

The site's co-founder Tiffany Cheng says it is aimed at millennials and people who are underrepresented.

"We wanted to make it possible for people to vote in the way they are most comfortable communicating in general," says Cheng.

Tech-savvy voters who are most comfortable texting, on Facebook or online will find it easy.

Prospective voters can either go to the website, use Facebook Messenger, or text HELLO to 384-387 using a smartphone. Then HelloVote guides them through the process according to the state they live in.

The user is first asked for their phone number and then asks for their name, address and date of birth.

Then the user enters a driver's license number or the last 4 digits of a social security number.

Once the system verifies the information, the registration process is complete.

Cheng's goal is to get as many Americans to the polls as possible and hopes they get the message in time for Election Day.

"They don't have an excuse anymore."

The last day to register to vote in California is October 24.
