39-Year-Old Suspect Shot By CHP Officers Remains In Serious Condition

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A suspect remains in serious condition after being shot by the California Highway Patrol in San Francisco' Oceanview neighborhood.

San Francisco police responded late Tuesday afternoon to an officer-involved shooting involving an outside agency in the area of Faxon Avenue and Montana Street.

Police said three officers from three agencies affiliated with the San Mateo County Vehicle Theft Task Force were in a single vehicle when they followed a wanted Honda from San Mateo County to San Francisco.

Investigators have since clarified that those officers worked for the CHP's Redwood City office as well as the San Mateo and Daly City police departments.

When they approached the vehicle around 3:30 p.m., a shooting ensued in which the CHP officer and the San Mateo Police officer both discharged their weapons.

The suspect, identified only as a 39-year-old man, was shot and transported to a hospital where he remains with life-threatening injuries as of this evening.

A CHP officer was also injured during the incident.

Police have not disclosed what led up to the shooting or how the officer was injured.

San Francisco Department of Public Health spokeswoman Rachael Kagan said this afternoon that the suspect was upgraded overnight from critical to stable condition, while the officer is in fair condition.
