Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake Hits Argentina

SAN JUAN, Argentina (CBS SF) -- A powerful earthquake shook San Juan in Argentina Sunday evening, the USGS said.

The magnitude 6.4 quake struck San Juan minutes before 1 p.m. Sunday. The quake struck at a depth of 77 miles from the earth's surface.

Strong earthquakes with an epicenter off the coast can trigger tsunamis, depending on the size and type of the fault movement. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center tracks earthquake data for the West Coast.
