Police Issue Photo Of Suspect Vehicle Linked To Gun Battle, Crash

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) – Authorities in the East Bay released a photo Monday of a vehicle police believe was involved in a shooting and subsequent head-on crash that hospitalized an older couple last week.

Police found surveillance video that captured the vehicle, believed to be a black 2015 Dodge Caravan, that was involved in a rolling gun battle with another suspect car on MacArthur Boulevard near the San Leandro-East Oakland border just after noon on Thursday.

The other car, a Nissan Altima, ended up in the 300 block of Dowling Boulevard, where it crashed head-on into a Toyota Prius with an older couple inside, police spokesman Lt. Robert McManus said.

The Prius got the brunt of the impact and was pushed backwards up onto another car parked at the side of Dowling.

Officers found a man near the Nissan who was suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are not considered life-threatening, according to McManus.

The suspects driving the Dodge Caravan were never located.

Investigators think that the Caravan could be a rental vehicle and are asking for employees of rental car agencies throughout the Bay Area to check for recent returns with gunfire damage to similar vehicles, as well as check current rentals for vehicles that match the description and have not yet been returned.

Anyone with information on the vehicle can anonymously call San Leandro Police at (510) 577-3278, or reach the department via text message by texting "TipSLPolice" to 888777.
