3 Snow Storms Headed Into Sierra, Best Travel Day On Thanksgiving
RENO (CBS SF/AP) -- A trio of storms on their way into the Sierra could make for hazardous travel into the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, with several inches of snow expected around Lake Tahoe and a mix of snow and mostly rain in the Reno area.
The first of the back-to-back-to-back storms should arrive Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning. As much 8 inches of snow is possible in the mountains above Lake Tahoe and up to 5 inches at lake level by Wednesday.
Gusty winds are also expected for much of the region.
Forecasters say Tuesday through Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon through Thanksgiving Day itself may be the best times for travel with sunny skies and mild conditions.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued from 7 p.m. Tuesday night to 10 a.m. Wednesday morning for California. Another advisory has been issued for Nevada from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday.
The second storm is expected to move into the Sierra late Friday, and another one is possible as a colder system arrives on Sunday.
The storm is likely to bring a lot more snow and could dump several inches in the Northern Sierra valleys and Tahoe Basin and up to a foot of snow at pass level.
The snowy conditions along I-80 and highway 50 are expected to affect the peak travel period after Thanksgiving. Expect difficult travel conditions Sunday Morning not only in the Sierra but for most of Northern Nevada as well.
"Anyone with travel plans should monitor the weather forecast for updates," said officials at the National Weather Service in a statement.
